Stonewall's Top 100 Employers List has named Newcastle City Council the UK's best employer for LGBT people in 2020.
The list is compiled using the UK's leading benchmark tool for LGBT inclusion in the workplace, the Workplace Equality Index. Participating employers self-assess their achievements and progress on LGBT equality in their workplace based on 10 areas of employment policy and practice. Staff at each employer also complete an anonymous survey about their experience of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Each employer is then scored and offered feedback on what's going well and where they need to focus their efforts, and the top 100 are celebrated publicly.
Newcastle City Council came out on top for 2020, because of their efforts in encouraging LGBT individuals to apply for their roles. According to Stonewall, they've utilised LGBT community events, such as Pride, to reach out to LGBT talent and helped management understand the barriers faced by LGBT jobseekers.
